Every year since 2007, the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) has published its Global Peace Index, analyzing safety in over 162 countries, which accounts for 99.7% of the world's territory. Based in Sydney, this institute is an independent, non-profit organization that measures the world's peace through the study of 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators related to trends in peace, the economic value, and how to develop peaceful societies.

The IEP achieves its goals by developing new conceptual frameworks to define peace; providing metrics to measure peace; and uncovering the relationships between business, peace, and prosperity, as well as promoting a better understanding of the cultural, economic, and political factors that create peace.

The results of the 2018 Global Peace Index reveal that the world's level of peace has deteriorated by 0.27% compared to last year. Thus, this year the world is a place where the tensions, conflicts, and economic crises that have emerged over the last decade have not yet been resolved. Additionally, conflicts in the Middle East have led to a gradual and sustained decline in peace.

Regarding the list of the safest countries in the world, we find that Spain ranks at number 30, which is a drop of 10 places from last year due to the tensions surrounding the Catalonia independence referendum.
