And the 7 Rural Wonders of Spain in 2016 are...
An idea born in the year 2000, it wasn't until five years ago that this list of the 7 Rural Wonders of Spain was materialized. This list is created annually by the rural accommodation search engine Toprural based on votes cast by the community of the website, which this year totaled 35,000. With 20 initial candidates, the objective of this list is to promote the spaces, municipalities, and natural beauties of Spain.
Thus, this year's winner with 17.01% of the votes cast is the municipality of Tejeda, located in the center of Gran Canaria, characterized by the immense rock formations in its vicinity. The list of the 7 Rural Wonders of Spain for 2016 also includes Setenil de las Bodegas (Cádiz), Frigiliana (Málaga), Hervás (Cáceres), Sugüenza (Guadalajara), Morella (Castellón), and Ochagavia (Navarra).
Juan Carlos Fernández, General Director for Southern Europe of the company states that "we are very proud of the initiative that started in 2012 and the relevance that the 7 Rural Wonders have gained over these five years. In the editions, traveler participation has increased to triple the number of votes, surpassing 35,000 in 2016. But, without a doubt, the involvement of the candidate municipalities has been key to the spread and success of this contest."
