Albania is one of the most overlooked countries in Europe, and since the end of its communist regime, it has sought to position itself as a tourist destination. However, it still preserves remnants of that era, such as the Pyramid of Tirana, located in the capital. The building is in a considerable state of disrepair, but the city has now decided to completely renovate it.

The Pyramid was built in 1988 in honor of dictator Enver Hoxha, who ruled the country for 50 years and had died just three years earlier. Its design, which features a brutalist style, was created by his own daughter, architect Prandera Hoxha. Thus, the building was intended to be a museum honoring the communist leader, but in 1991, the Pyramid began to be used as a conference and exhibition center.

Over the years, the building changed uses, eventually serving as NATO's base during the Kosovo War, a nightclub called La Momia, and even the headquarters of a television channel. The country, determined to forget the original purpose of the Pyramid, ended up neglecting the building itself, leading it to a significant state of deterioration today.

The Albanian government considered several options, including its demolition, but it will ultimately be completely renovated by the architectural firm MVRDV. The concrete structure will be repurposed, and the atrium and its surroundings will be transformed into green spaces. In this way, the building will evolve into a new cultural hub, featuring cafes, studios, workshops, and classrooms where young Albanians can learn about art and technology for free.

Additionally, MVRDV also plans for the building to become an event center and a major tourist attraction in the city. As stated by the founding partner of the architectural firm, Winy Maas, the goal is for the Pyramid to adapt to the new era while preserving its complex history and serving as "a monument for the people."
