After three years of preparation, the Atlantic Museum, located 12 meters deep off the southern coast of Lanzarote, in the Bay of Coloradas, officially opens to the general public today.

The Atlantic Museum is the first contemporary underwater museum in Europe and consists of over 300 human-shaped sculptures created by artist Jason deCaires Taylor in collaboration with and funded by the Cabildo of Lanzarote. This museum was created to serve as an artificial reef that promotes marine biodiversity and increases the local fish population. The materials used to create the statues are harmless to the marine environment and are constantly changing to be in harmony with the sea.

It is true that this museum was inaugurated in a first phase in March 2016, but it is today that Jason deCaires Taylor has finally completed the installation of the sculptures, and we can say that the museum is fully finished.

With 2,500 square meters of area at a depth of 12 meters, this museum is accessible to divers and snorkelers through the accredited dive centers in Lanzarote. As for the price, it is 12 euros for divers and 8 euros for those who prefer snorkeling. This museum is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, although the last dive takes place at 3:40 PM.
