Barcelona is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the world. In 2024, over 15 million people traveled to the Catalan capital, making it one of the most visited cities of the year.
Despite this, there are people who believe it is not worth the hype. This topic was discussed in the British podcast 'Behind the Screen', which has about 7,000 followers in mid-September. In a recent Instagram post, the two podcast members share their thoughts on what they consider to be the most overrated vacation destinations.
Curtis Morton, the host, and his partner Bart list their top five most overrated vacation spots. The first destination mentioned is the city of Venice, one of the most famous tourist locations in the world. "It smells bad, it's expensive, and it's not the real Italian experience," Bart says. "You'd better go to Florence," he adds.
Following Venice is Bali, which they criticize "because everyone wants to go work remotely from there, and it's nothing special," New York, described as "a crowded and very expensive city," Santorini, and Dubai. For him, the city in the Emirates is the most overrated destination: "I don't understand why people go to live there... it's just buildings in the desert."
"There is a lot of theft"
Morton, for his part, lists five different destinations. In fifth place, he mentions Barcelona, a city he considers highly overrated because "there is a lot of theft": "It's one of the top places for pickpockets... it's not that great." His partner Bart asks him if he has ever been robbed in the Catalan capital, to which Morton responds affirmatively.
On Morton's list are Greece, London (for the same reasons as New York), Marrakech, and Paris: "One of the worst places I've been. 10 euros for a pint, the people are rude, and I think it's the worst place to go on vacation," he concludes.
