Summer has arrived, bringing with it the desire to enjoy our well-deserved beach vacations. Spain is filled with spectacular beaches perfect for relaxing, spending the day, taking a dip, or even practicing your favorite water sport. However, it is well known that enjoyment must go hand in hand with civic responsibility, just like the care for the environment. This is why many municipalities impose fines on those who do not respect certain rules. Because yes, sunbathing is free... But not everything goes.
Showering with Gel or Shampoo
For many of us, a day at the beach is not complete unless you finish with a shower that leaves you feeling brand new. But you have to be careful, as many times you'll have to wait until you get home. Don't get me wrong, at the beach you can rinse off the salt and annoying sand, but what you can't use is any type of shampoo or gel. And you have to take this seriously, as it is the Coastal Law that prohibits this throughout Spanish territory.
You might be wondering why, and the answer is clear; it is to protect marine flora and fauna. The use of shampoos and soaps in showers can cause nitrates and phosphates from the products to end up in the sea water, which can lead to cloudy water or harm marine life, as many of the phosphates act as fertilizers.
Other Important Considerations
The key is to pay attention to the informational signs at each beach, do your research, and use common sense. What might seem trivial can end up costing you a fortune. So now you know; if you don't want your sunny day to cost more than a week at a resort, it's better to educate yourself and follow the rules.
- Smoking on beaches: Fines can range from $30 to $2,000, depending on the beach. More than 500 beaches are now "smoke-free". This is no trivial matter, as cigarette butts are the most numerous form of individual plastic waste in marine environments. It is estimated that each cigarette butt deposited in the sea (approximately 4.5 trillion per year globally) contaminates between ten and fifteen liters of water. Furthermore, because of the presence of this waste in marine environments, humans accumulate microplastics in their bodies.
- Taking sand, shells, or stones: Fines can vary depending on the impact, but they are usually substantial. Although it may seem like an innocent souvenir, the prohibition is tied to environmental care. In Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, or Cabo de Gata, special attention is paid to enforcing this regulation.
- Camping or sleeping on the beach: Fines can range from $100 to $1,500. Many beaches explicitly prohibit pitching a tent or staying overnight. This can be considered unauthorized occupation of public maritime-terrestrial domain.
- Playing loud music: Fines can be as high as $600. Many beachgoers visit the beach to enjoy tranquility and nature after a year of routine and hustle, so if you set up a party at your umbrella and disturb other beachgoers, you might end up fined for disrupting the peace or causing disturbances in a public space.
- Playing ball or practicing sports in prohibited areas: Fines can be approximately $100 to $300. Many beaches designate areas for sports activities. If you play outside of them or disturb other users, you may be fined.
