It has been 75 years since the disappearance of five torpedo bombers and their crews from the United States Navy, known as 'Flight 19', in the waters of the Bermuda Triangle, an area of the Atlantic Ocean that forms an equilateral triangle between the Bermuda Islands, Puerto Rico, and Miami, Florida. A mystery that intrigues, and as Australian researcher Shane Satterley explains to 9News, "it is still not known for certain what happened."

It is one of many unsolved cases, and there are many more recent ones: the Southeast Division of the United States Coast Guard has unsuccessfully halted the search for a vessel that disappeared in the same waters at the end of 2020. After dozens of disappearances of ships and planes over the decades, the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle remains a phenomenon that has yet to be resolved.

The Bermuda Triangle has made headlines in all international media since the early last century. The disappearances that have occurred over the years have led to scientific studies, wild conspiracy theories, and, for a long time, significant media presence.

But in recent years, it has received virtually no attention regarding this "strange" phenomenon. Have we accepted it as an unresolved mystery? Is there any scientific theory that can explain what happened?

The Bermuda Triangle The mysterious triangle of disappearances covers thousands of miles in the North Atlantic Ocean and is one of the busiest areas with traffic moving back and forth along the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico.

The origin of its name dates back to 1953 when several writers published articles in magazines about the supposed danger of the area, although it had previously been known as "The Atlantic Cemetery."

Conspiracy Theories

Conspiracy Theories As with anything that sparks a bit of mystery, it is normal to hear hundreds of theories trying to explain these strange occurrences. For some, it is the work of pirates who destroy ships and kidnap their crews. Others have mentioned extraterrestrials abducting those who pass by.

The Bermuda Triangle, it is said, is a haunted place. It is normal to think this because it has long had a fearsome reputation, and it was said that any ship that crossed its waters would disappear without a trace. Of the planes, it has been claimed that when flying over this area, the radar screens blink, and many disappear from their signal without any explanation.

Others have ventured to say that it is precisely in the waters of this equilateral triangle that the legendary lost island of Atlantis is located, being the cause of the disappearances.

Even more rational investigations have attempted to explain this phenomenon, alleging that "there is a methane gas that erupts with ocean sediments that causes planes to crash in its waters." But these are investigations with no scientific evidence.

This, of course, is just one version of the story. It is clear that we are talking about something "mysterious" due to the number of vessels and planes that have disappeared in its waters. However, it does not mean we must think it is the result of something sinister or fantastic. Science has managed to provide several answers that could be valid.

What does the scientific community think?

What does the scientific community think? The scientific community has not reached a consensus on what happens in this place, although there are hundreds of theories.

As noted by the Encyclopedia Britannica, there are various things that are known and proven about the Bermuda Triangle that can be completely clarifying to unravel the mystery.

For example, the high incidence of disappearances in the area may be due to the fact that it is one of the busiest routes in the world, both by sea and air, thus significantly increasing the risk of an accident, purely statistically.

They also report that there are different meteorological studies indicating that the area is subject to frequent and severe tropical storms and hurricanes, causing rough waters. Like the Gulf Stream, this powerful ocean current is known to cause sharp changes in the local climate and, indeed, passes through the Bermuda Triangle area.

Despite the reputation this area of the Atlantic may have, the British publication also concludes that the Bermuda Triangle has a high incidence of disappearances, but no more than in any other comparable region of the Atlantic Ocean.

This theory is also supported by the United States Coast Guard, which states that "the number of missing persons in the Bermuda Triangle is the same as in any other part of the world."

The World Wildlife Fund has also shared its opinion after conducting a thorough study of maritime navigation routes. They determined that the Bermuda Triangle is not one of the 10 most dangerous bodies of water in the world for maritime transport.

This place on the globe has hundreds of explanations, theories, and wild ideas about what happened. But for now, as many of the experts and scientists involved in the study of its waters explain, "it is a place from which there is still much to learn." There are, at the moment, a few facts that strip away some of its mystique and present a reality that is not very compatible with legends and fantastic theories. Perhaps that is why the Bermuda Triangle has ceased to be news.
