Best Things to Do:
The Best White Wine According to OCU Costs 4 Euros and You Can Buy It at Any Supermarket
A good wine must meet the precise characteristics to be considered the best in the world: a perfect combination of acidity, bitterness, and body, feeling balanced, and having a pleasant persistence on the palate (known as 'long finish')... It is often mistakenly assumed that quality comes with a high price, but the Consumer and User Organization (OCU) has once again proven that this is not the case, but rather the opposite.
Enjoying a good wine doesn't have to be a strain on your wallet or on your palate. Typically, red wines are discussed, but in Spain, we also have a great selection of whites at very good prices that are delicious. You don't need to be a grand expert, as the white wine that the OCU has named the best can be found in any supermarket and costs only 4 euros. OCU's tasters have made a decision and there is one wine that has truly captured their hearts.
What is the Best White Wine
After conducting several tasting tests and composition analyses on 31 young white wines from the 2023 vintage-among which are 15 Denominations of Origin and 2 Country Wines-the experts praised the fresh and fruity flavor, the balance in acidity, and the unbeatable price-quality ratio of Barbadillo 2023, which comes from the wine region of Cádiz. It is the perfect companion for dishes like seafood, fish, cooked cold cuts, salads, legumes, soups, creams, pasta, or the best cheese in Spain also chosen by OCU.
It stood out in all categories above the rest. Its acidity perfectly blends with food and is not at all intrusive. Along with this, the freshness adds a revitalizing touch to the palate, making it a unique experience at a nearly ridiculous price. From the Barbadillo wineries in Sanlucar de Barrameda, they describe it as "smooth, complete, versatile, and elegant with that unique and attractive hint of salinity." They also highlight that it is now "refined with a livelier and more transparent finesse."
It has not been the only wine with notable characteristics according to the OCU study, as the report also makes other special mentions such as Terras Gauda and Martín Codax wines (D.O. Rías Baixas), Marqués de Riscal ECO (D.O. Rueda), Enato (D.O. Somontano), and Raimat ECO (D.O. Costers del Segre). These bottles all fall between 6 and 10 euros, which makes them very affordable. On the contrary, eleven wines were penalized for excessive use of sulfites and acids.
