Spain is recognized as one of the world's great wine-producing countries, thanks to the diversity and quality of its wines. With such varied geography and climate, every corner of the country offers a unique wine that reflects the character of its land and traditions. From mountainous areas to warm plains, Spanish provinces become a wine mosaic where each region adds a distinctive touch.
We have recently toured the best wineries in our country, and today we will discover the map showing the best wine from each province in Spain. Each wine carries with it the history and effort of generations dedicated to viticulture, making the experience of tasting it an ode to the love for our 'savoir faire'. Thus, this map not only represents the best wines but also serves as a window into the essence of each province.
A Coruña: Albariño Gundián from Adega Valdés
On the banks of the Ulla River lies Adega Valdés, a winery that combines family tradition with the most avant-garde winemaking techniques. The grape that is primarily harvested on the property is albariño, the soul of its first brand, Gundián. And, precisely, this wine is the best in the province, as demonstrated by winning first prize at the last edition of the Albariño Festival held in Cambados every August.
Álava: Viña El Pisón 2022
From a 2.4-hectare vineyard in Laguardia comes ArtadiViña El Pisón 2022, a Tempranillo that has already enamored international experts such as Robert Parker and James Suckling, earning the highest score in several international wine guides.
Albacete: Chardonnay aged in Barrel 2021 Pago Finca Élez
The Pago Finca Élez winery, located in El Bonillo, Albacete, is considered one of the first 'Vino de Pago' Designations of Origin for a property in Spain. They have recently achieved various accolades in the international wine scene, such as at the DECANTER World Wine Awards.
Specifically, at the DECANTER World Wine Awards, the 2021 Chardonnay aged in barrel won a Gold Medal and a notable score of 96 points, placing this organic wine among the best Chardonnays in the world.
Alicante: Fierroca 2021 by Pepe Mendoza Casa Agrícola
This wine stands out as one of the 'red gems of the Levant', according to critics, due to its unique character that combines the uniqueness of the Giró variety with the iron and limestone terroir that bears its name.
In terms of accolades, the Fierroca 2021 has been rated 95 points by the Peñín Guide, positioning it among the most outstanding wines in the region, making it ideal for collectors, as its production is limited.
Almería: Sierra Almagrera 2020 Crianza
Sierra Almagrera Crianza 2020, produced by Bodega Sierra Almagrera, is composed of Syrah, Tempranillo, Monastrell, and Garnacha varieties, and comes from the Desierto de Almería Vino de la Tierra. It has received prestigious awards such as CINVE Gold and Bacchus Silver, thus becoming one of the best wines in Spain.
Asturias: Corias Guilfa red 2023
The Corias Guilfa Red 2023 is a wine produced in the Cangas del Narcea region of Asturias, at the Monasterio de Corias winery. This red is made from native grapes, primarily Carrasquín and Verdejo Negro, and is aged in French oak barrels. Monasterio de Corias can boast of appearing on the famous Parker list with 13 wines that surpass 90 points.
Ávila: Sursum Corda 100% Garnacha from Tierras de Cebreros
In the 2023 Peñín Guide, the Sursum Corda 100% Garnacha from Tierras de Cebreros received a rating of 91 points. Made from Garnacha grapes from ancient vineyards over 60 years old, located in the municipality of Cebreros, it is subjected to 3-4 months of aging in American and French oak barrels. Experts describe it as a balanced, flavorful wine with great aromatic intensity.
Badajoz: Rutas del Arte Tempranillo & Syrah 2023 from Bodegas Valdeorite
The Rutas del Arte Tempranillo & Syrah 2023, produced by Bodegas Valdeorite, is a red wine from the Vino de la Tierra of Extremadura. This blend consists of 64% Tempranillo and 36% Syrah. It has received a score of 90 out of 100 according to the Gourmet Wines Guide and can be purchased for around €15.
Balearic Islands: Macià Batle Crianza 1856 from Bodegas Macià Batle
Bodegas Macià Batle, located in the heart of Binissalem, is one of the most renowned wineries in Mallorca, thanks to over 300 awards and recognitions received both nationally and internationally. Among them, its Macià Batle Crianza 1856, made from a blend of native and international grapes such as Mantonegro, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon deserves a place of honor.
Barcelona: Enoteca Gramona Brut Nature 2011
The best wine from Barcelona highlighted by the Peñín Guide 2025 is Enoteca Gramona Brut Nature 2011, produced by Gramona winery. This sparkling wine made from charelo and macabeo varieties has received the highest possible score, making it a standout cava not just in Barcelona but also nationally.
Bizkaia: Artizar 2018, Bodegas Itsasmendi
Bodegas Itsasmendi has reached a new milestone with its txakoli Itsasmendi Artizar, winning the Gran Bacchus de Oro, the highest award in a prestigious international competition held in Madrid, where it was also chosen as the best white wine of 2024. This event, organized by the Spanish Union of Tasters, gathered over 1,900 wines from 18 countries, awarding 73 of them, 52 from Spain. With this recognition, which adds to a history that includes a Bacchus de Oro in 2010, 12 Bacchus de Plata, five Bacchus de Oro, and two Gran Bacchus de Oro, Bodegas Itsasmendi reaffirms its commitment to placing txakoli from Bizkaia among the great international white wines.
Burgos: Dominio del Águila Albillo Viñas Viejas 2016
Dominio del Águila Albillo Viñas Viejas 2016 is a white wine from the D.O. Ribera del Duero, made exclusively from the Albillo Mayor variety. This wine is notable for coming from old vineyards cultivated under organic farming principles and aged for 10 months in French oak barrels.
In terms of accolades, it has received high scores from renowned critics, such as 97 points from Robert Parker, 95 points from the Peñín Guide, and also 97 points from Tim Atkin, which positions it as one of the best whites in the region.
Cáceres: Habla No. 32 2021
Habla No. 32 from Bodegas Habla is a single-varietal Syrah that stands out for its production using organic viticulture and 12 months of aging in French oak barrels. While one of its most award-winning wines is HABLA del Silencio, its number 32 highlights the unique characteristics of the slate terroir of the region, positioning it as a benchmark in its category.
Cádiz: Barbadillo Blanco 2023 from Bodegas Barbadillo
According to an analysis conducted by OCU, Barbadillo Blanco 2023 has been the star wine of 2024 by OCU. This wine from the winery located in Sanlúcar de Barrameda offers excellent quality-price ratio and can be found in large retailers as well as in the online store of Barbadillo.
Cantabria: Casona Micaela
In the coastal region of Cantabria, in the Villaverde valley, we discover Casona Micaela, a winery that only markets one wine: Casona Micaela. The varieties used in its production are 75% albariño and 25% riesling from Jornillo. This seven and a half-hectare estate is located at an altitude of 400 meters with calcareous soils and a southeast orientation. Casona Micaela is the only winery in Cantabria included in the Proensa Guide of the best wines in Spain 2024 thanks to Casona Micaela '22, a wine that stands out for its marked acidity that isn't unpleasant.
Castellón: Peñagolosa Milochocientoscatorce
The best sommelier in the world, the Swedish resident in Bordeaux Andreas Larsson, has rated Peñagolosa Milochocientoscatorce as the best red wine in the category Vinos de España in a blind tasting. According to that same tasting process, Peñagolosa Milochocientoscatorce ranks among the top 30 wines in the world. A red wine with high aromatic and floral intensity, it has a long and persistent finish. It is priced at €39.
Ciudad Real: El Linze
El Linze is a red wine made in Valdepeñas by Selección Lucendo, which is, by merit, one of the iconic wines of the region. Pioneering the use of the tinto velasco variety, it has received recognition as the best wine in Spain by the AEPEV (Spanish Association of Wine Journalists and Writers) and has repeated as the best wine of the year in the category of red wines by the Wine Up! Guide 2023. A bottle of the 2022 vintage is priced at €20.90.
Córdoba: Cuen Blanc
Cuen Blanc is listed among the most prestigious unbarreled white wines in the national panorama. Ximenium, by Bodegas El Monte, is a project deeply rooted in the wine culture of Moriles, launched in 2022, and since then has received various accolades, such as the Gold Medal in DECANTER. Bodegas El Monte focuses on producing high-quality wines using native varieties from the region, such as Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel, applying artisanal and environmentally friendly winemaking techniques, such as hand harvesting at night. Its price is around €15.
Cuenca: Clos Lojen
The wine portal 'Wine Searcher', in its latest ranking of the 10 best wines for their quality-price ratio, has highlighted Clos Lojen (from Ponce wineries and vineyards), which, at a price of less than €9 and with a short aging in French oak barrels, offers the bobal grape variety from La Manchuela. A wine full of minerality that is intense on the nose with very fresh red fruits, blueberries, cherries, and notes of thyme that give it a marked youthful character.
Girona: Nívia
The wines from Girona are largely represented by the Denomination of Origin Empordà, which groups together 333 wines and 43 wineries. Within the D.O., the winery Mas llunes shines thanks to Nívia, a white wine cultivated from garnacha blanca and macabeo grapes situated on slate slopes, from where the sea and the mountains of Canigó can be seen. With various awards under its belt, this wine (meaning 'of snow' in ancient Catalan) is priced around €12 for its 2022 vintage.
Granada: 1500 H Coupage
The 1500 H wine from Pago del Vicario is a blend of four grapes (pinot noir, tempranillo, cabernet sauvignon, and merlot), sourced from a vineyard located at 1,500 meters altitude in the Sierra de Gádor, adjacent to the Sierra Nevada Natural Park in the town of Fondón. From this limited edition wine, 26,405 bottles have been produced and can be acquired for just over €13.
Guadalajara: 5o Año
5o Año is the flagship wine of Finca Rio Negro, a wine that improves with age in the bottle. Made from the selection of the best tempranillo and cabernet sauvignon plots from its vineyard, it stands out for its cherry red color. On the nose, it is intense, with dominant black fruits, while on the palate it is very persistent yet balanced. Its price? €31.50.
Gipuzkoa: Txomin Etxaniz
In Gipuzkoa, the most notable wines are usually txakolis, which have the Denomination of Origin Getariako Txakolina. Among them, we highlight that of Txomin Etxaniz. This winery in Getaria is known for wines recognized for their freshness, balanced acidity, and light citrus notes, ideal for pairing with fish and seafood. You can find it for just over €9.
Huelva: 21Setecientos
21Setecientos is a young white from Bodegas Magasé that stands out for the minerality of a century-old zulema vineyard. Produced in an old winery from the early 20th century, located in La Palma del Condado, this wine has been rated as excellent in the Peñín Guide. You can enjoy it for less than €10.
Huesca: Clarión
For those who don't 'understand' wine, the DO Somontano is undoubtedly one of the great undiscovered gems in enological terms, with Clarión being one of its main jewels. This white wine from Viñas del Vero is a rarity within the work of the Huesca winery, as it is made with a blend of different white grapes sourced from their best vineyards, crafted separately until forming the final blend. Rated 95 points by Wine Searcher, it is available for about €17, standing out for its excellent quality-price ratio.
Jaén: Malaostia
Malaostia is a completely artisanal wine from Bodega Cefrián, cultivated in a vineyard located 1,000 meters above sea level, which gives it a unique singularity with mineral nuances. This wine combines syrah and merlot grapes, enriched with a touch of American oak. Although it doesn't go through barrels, it is complemented with oak chips. You can find it for €9.
La Rioja: El Andén de la Estación
El Andén de la Estación is the new wine from the renowned Bodega Muga, famous for its winemaking tradition. This limited production wine is made from tempranillo and garnacha grapes. Its vineyard, situated on clay and limestone terrace soils, allows for extraordinary cultivation. The vinification includes fermentation with indigenous yeasts in large tanks, followed by 14 months of aging in oak barrels from France and Central Europe. A treasure that can be enjoyed for just over €16.
Las Palmas: Chirato
If there is one wine that perfectly expresses the culture and history of Las Palmas, it is Chirato. With 92 points in the Parker guide, this wine is produced at the Hinojo wineries. A wine with primary fruity aromas and a light, subtle, and elegant body. The bottle costs around €24.
León: Heredad 26 Godello
In the territory of Castilla y León, wine triumphs. In León, more specifically, a white grape variety called Godello triumphs. In the León area of El Bierzo, there is a wine that has received numerous awards and is the favorite child of the region: Heredad 26 Godello, a wine with a century-old winemaking tradition produced at the Heredad Morán and López wineries. Priced at €10.95 per bottle, you can try the best wine from León.
Lérida: La Pell Les Pedrisses 2019
In a natural enclave like the Serra Llarga is where our next protagonist: La Pell, a wine made through a blend of 22 of the grape varieties from Vinyet. Although they want to ferment 24 varieties together. The price of their bottles ranges around €50-70.
Lugo: Guímaro Finca Meixeman
In Lugo, there is much talk of the next wine we are going to present: Guímaro Finca Meixeman, a red wine from the D.O. Ribeira Sacra produced by the Guímaro winery. For €26.05, we have a wine that has captivated international critic James Suckling, ranking it as the top wine in our country according to his judgment.
Madrid: Castillo de Salvanés
The best wine from the Community of Madrid: Castillo de Salvanés, produced by Recespaña Soc. Cooperativa. This year it was awarded as the best wine of the Community of Madrid. This young red wine might be the most economical on the list: €2.40 a bottle to enjoy the best wine from Madrid.
Málaga: Ariyanas Terruño Pizarroso
In Málaga, two Dutchmen saw the perfect opportunity to recover abandoned vineyards and give them a second life. Thus was born one of the best wines in Andalusia: Ariyanas Terruño Pizarroso 2016. This sweet wine with mineral nuances is one of the more special wines on the list. Its price is around €28 per bottle and is a must-try in the area.
Murcia: Casa Castillo Pie Franco 2021
One of the quintessential wineries in Murcia is undoubtedly Casa Castillo, located in Jumilla. Here they make one of the best wines in the area: Casa Castillo Pie Franco 2021. With 99 points in Parker's guide, this Mediterranean red is a gift for the palate, and a hefty hit to the wallet: €130 per bottle.
Navarra: Viña Zorzal Señora de las Alturas
Lowering the price a bit, but not the quality, we find Viña Zorzal Señora de las Alturas in Navarra. This red wine has 96 points in the Parker guide and costs only €26. Made exclusively with Garnacha grapes, this wine melts in the mouth thanks to its smoothness.
Ourense: Guitián Fermented in Barrel 2022
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food has decided the best wine in Spain, and it is in Ourense. The white wine Guitián Fermented in Barrel 2022, belonging to the Denomination of Origin Valdeorras, has already received the gold medal at the international Bacchus 2024 competition. With a golden yellow color, this wine is intense and unfolds aromas of peach and citrus and has been produced by Bodegas A Tapada.
Palencia: Luces rosado
We couldn't miss including the rosé wine from Bodega Remigio Salas, located in the town of Dueñas (Palencia). This wine is not the only one we could recommend from this winery, as their red and white wines have also been awarded this year, however, the Luces rosado has received international recognition in 50 Great ROSÉ Wines of the World 2024. At just €16, you can enjoy this great award-winning wine.
Pontevedra: albariño Condes de Albarei and La Fillaboa 1898 2016 white
In Pontevedra, we will make an exception and select two wines worthy of this ranking. On one hand, the albariño Condes de Albarei, from the winery of the same name, perfectly represents the purity of the albariño grape, the star grape of the Rías Baixas in Galicia. A case of bottles ranges from €30 to €126.
And on the other hand, La Fillaboa 1898 from Bodegas Fillaboa, is an albariño aged over six years on fine lees in stainless steel that has been recognized by major wine guides both nationally and internationally. Located in Salvaterra de Miño, this winery recorded one of the best harvests in history in 2016, resulting in a special white wine intended for aging of which only 6,636 bottles have been produced.
Salamanca: Calixto Rufete 2019
In the Sierra de Salamanca, good, beautiful, and cheap wine is made. The Bodegas Rochal have perfectly crafted this queen of Salamanca in terms of wines, and the Calixto Rufete from 2019 is one of their sovereigns. This red wine, which costs only €5 per bottle, perfectly expresses the quality of wines being produced in Salamanca lately.
Segovia: Avelino Vegas 100th Anniversary 2018
Within the DO Rueda, some of the best wines made with Verdejo are found. In Segovia, even though it is a less famous wine region, excellent wines continue to be produced. In this region, we find 6 Segovian wineries that fall under the Denomination of Origin, with Avelino Vegas being chosen as the winery of the year by the Gourmet Wines Guide 2021, and it also ranks in the top 100 of the best wineries in the world according to the Spanish Association of Wine Journalists and Writers. Thus, we have chosen Avelino Vegas 100th Anniversary, a tribute to the birth of its founder, made with 100% tempranillo grapes from the DO Ribera del Duero.
Sevilla: Zancúo Gran Reserva 2019
In a land where beer reigns at bars, wine also has its place. Accumulating awards since 2016 and recently gaining international fame, winning the Gilbert and Galard, one of the most prestigious wine contests in France. This is the Zancúo Gran Reserva 2019, a dry red wine with a hint of ripe fruit. It is produced in Constantina, in the Sierra Norte of Seville, at the Bodega La Margarita. The production of these bottles takes place on an 11-hectare estate, where the best grapes are selected from over 95,000 kg, among red and white grapes, to create the best bottles. Due to the size of the vineyard, all resulting products are limited edition.
Soria: Dominio de Atauta 2018, La Roza
The prestigious Peñín Guide, in its 2025 edition, already places a wine from Soria in high regard. After a process of 9,800 tastings throughout Spain, only 8 wines have managed to score the maximum of 100 points, and one of them is found in the east of the Soria province, under the Denomination of Origin Ribera del Duero. This is Dominio de Atauta La Roza 2018, which has improved its score over past editions of the magazine until reaching the maximum. It is a wine with very limited production with just 600 bottles and grown in vineyards that are over a century old.
Tarragona: Seducció 2023
The Denomination of Origin of Tarragona, established in 1945, is one of the oldest in Spain with a winemaking tradition dating back to the Roman occupation of the peninsula. With that tradition, it was normal to produce a wine that would meet expectations. In this place, white grape predominates over red, with 83% of the surface area allocated to the former, making them the most representative wines of the region. In the 30th edition of the Wines of the Denomination of Origin of Tarragona contest, the winner of the Aromatic White Wine category has been Seducció 2023, Vinícola de Nulles.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife: Brumas de Ayosa Malvasía Aromática
In the Canary Islands, for the second consecutive year, a wine from Güimar has been chosen as the best in the Canary Islands for 2024. In this case, it has been Brumas de Ayosa Malvasía Aromática, awarded for its quality and not its quantity: its production is limited to about 200,000 bottles per harvest. The winery that produces this wine on the island of Tenerife does so under the Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) Valle de Güímar, and has already received the award for "best wine of the Canary Islands" in 2019, 2020, and 2023. This golden yellow wine with floral and citrus aromas is priced around €22 per bottle.
Teruel: Lagar d'Amprius Garnacha 2016
Wines from Bajo Aragón have earned their reputation over time, where the Mediterranean climate present in the province of Teruel has allowed for the development of a wide variety of dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet, and sweet wines. In this place, the Matarraña region stands out as one of the most recognized in terms of wines, and it is here that the famous Peñín wine guide selected Lagar d'Amprius Garnacha 2016 as the best in the province, awarding it a total of 92 points. The high quality of wines from Amprudis Lagar is recognized with awards such as the Gold Medal from Grenaches du Monde 2019, Bacchus Gold 2018, and Mundus Vini Gold 2018, among others.
Toledo: LATIERRA Cabernet Sauvignon & Syrah 2017
Bodegas Latúe has won the Gold Medal at the VinEspaña awards and the Ecovino awards. LATIERRA is created from the most select Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah grapes, in an exclusive limited edition of numbered bottles. Bodegas Latúe, a pioneer in the production of organic wines in Castilla-La Mancha, stands out for its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. It presents an intense cherry color with a medium-high layer. On the nose, aromas of ripe red fruits stand out, accompanied by spicy notes of thyme and nutmeg. Its flavor, marked by aging in barrels, offers a classic bouquet perfectly balanced, with soft tannins and a persistent aftertaste.
Valencia: La Mujer Caballo Taronja 2021
In the 2024 edition of the Peñín guide, 50% of the tasted wines received a score above 90 points (which equates to outstanding) in their verdicts, with a total of 67 references nearing excellence. Among these, two productions from Fil·loxera & CIA stood out, each scoring 93 points. Made with recovered native grape varieties, this highlights the value of local varieties. For this selection, we opted for La Mujer Caballo Taronja 2021, a white crianza made with Valencí (70%) and moscatel romano (30%), which has a select production of just 399 bottles.
Valladolid: Whisba 2020, Bodegas Rodríguez and Sanzo
In the wine award contest of the Wine Museum, the Valladolid Provincial Council presided over the awarding of prizes for the best wines in the province, which is held every two years. During the 2023 edition, which set a record with 228 samples, the award-winning wine was Whisba 2020, from which the provincial wine museum acquired 2,500 bottles of what has been its representative brand throughout the past two years. The wine from Bodegas Rodriguez and Sanzo is a crianza red made with tempranillo from VT Castilla y León, maintaining a fermentation process of 18 months in oak barrels that were previously used for whisky, which adds an interesting nuance of complexity to the wine.
Zamora: Alabaster, Teso la Monja
After the XV edition of the National Prize of the Spanish Association of Wine Journalists and Writers, the province of Zamora saw three wines awarded as the best of the year 2023, among which two were from the Denomination of Origin of Toro and a cream of pomace made in the Zamorano municipality of Camarzana de Tera. Both are wines of high category and price, making it difficult to choose. However, according to the Gourmet Guide, Alabaster, from Bodega Teso la Monja has a higher score, with 98 points than El Primero de Fariña, from Bodegas Fariña, with 93 points, which is why we chose the former for this selection.
Zaragoza: Viñas del Vero Gran Vos Magnum 2015
The Gourmet Wines Guide, a pioneer in Spain, recorded in its latest edition a total of 4,735 reviewed wines and 1,196 referenced wineries, in the search for the most unique wines, wines with "DNA", where Aragón returns to have a place of honor in 2024, with a total of 14 wines scoring 90 or higher. Among these, we have selected Viñas del Vero Gran Vos Magnum 2015, with 95 points, as the most outstanding of the community. This is a reserva red made by Viñas del Vero, DO Somontano, priced at an average of €38 and a deep ruby color with cherry highlights, ideal for meats, cured cheeses, and bitter chocolates.
