The Church of the Nativity: The Church Built Where Jesus Was Born
The birth of Jesus is a historical event known and cherished by millions of people worldwide. It is a milestone in Christianity, and its story has spread across the globe, reaching some of the most remote places. It is precisely here that the Son of God was born, in a humble manger on the outskirts of Bethlehem. 2023 years ago, the Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus in present-day Palestine, within a small barn alongside an ox, a mule, and her husband Joseph.
After Jesus' death, the evangelist Luke, who was very close to the most famous family in the universe, asked Mary to recount the most important aspects of the Messiah's life, and among them was, of course, the day of his birth. It was Luke who recorded the place where the little one, pursued since birth, entered the world. Helena of Constantinople, mother of the well-known Emperor Constantine I, was a devout believer in the story of Jesus; therefore, she ordered the construction of churches throughout the territory. The most important was dedicated to honoring the place where the Son of God was born.
Once the exact location of his arrival in the world was confirmed, a massive basilica was decided upon, adorned with some of the most expensive materials available: gold and lapis lazuli. Since that moment, the Church of the Nativity has become a pilgrimage site for thousands of faithful Christians and curious visitors wanting to learn about its history. While it cannot be verified that the original manger has been preserved, its relics are still very much present today.
Inside this majestic church, one can find a small crypt where the site believed to be Jesus' birthplace can be visited. On the floor of the grotto, you can see the "Star of Bethlehem," which frames a hole where the manger is believed to have stood. This impressive monument was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2016.
This earthly temple retains its original bell towers and gardens, but ongoing renovations to improve its structure make it a place filled with scaffolding and construction materials whenever visited. It is surprising to think that in the city where it is located, over 98% of the population practices Islam, and the number of local Christians continues to decline. Nevertheless, this basilica will remain an impressive site of Christianity that more and more people visit to connect with faith.
