It is the world's favorite bean; whether filtered or brewed, prepared with milk, cardamom, liquor, or sugar. And it doesn't matter if it's pronounced coffee, coffe, or qahwah, because it is loved all over the world. It may be almost ubiquitous, although the cultures surrounding it are diverse.

Coffee is surprisingly intertwined with the history of the United States. The British first introduced it in Jamestown, and colonists adopted mass coffee consumption after the Boston Tea Party of 1773.

The United States is the second largest coffee consumer in North America and pays the second highest price per cup: $3.77. Bahamians pay more, about $3.91 per cup, while Hondurans pay less at $1.75 per cup.

In Mexico, where coffee is brewed and served with sweet bread, a cup of coffee costs around $2.17. Costa Rica, which has adopted laws to maintain high standards for growing Arabica beans, has an average price of $2.61 per cup.

South America is a great place to drink and learn about coffee. With two of the world's top coffee producers, Brazil and Colombia, residents and visitors can enjoy locally grown, economical beans. Both countries are popular coffee tourism destinations, where coffee lovers can tour regional farms to learn about growing techniques, harvesting, and history.

Consequently, coffee prices across the continent vary widely. Chile is the most expensive, with an average of $3.17 per cup. Bogotá, in Colombia, is one of the cheapest, with an average of $1.26 per cup... But beware! These are some of the highest quality coffee beans in the world.

Europe

Europe is full of coffee connoisseurs and regional specialties. The Swiss pay the most for a cup of coffee, $5.65 per cup. Viennese, for example, pay about $4. In Madrid, the average price of a cup of coffee is around $2.75.

Eastern Europe is one of the places where we find the cheapest coffee. The Albanian capital, Tirana, enjoys the cheapest coffee on the continent, paying approximately $1.21 per cup.

Middle East and Central Asia

The first documented coffee culture came from Yemen in the 15th century, where Sufi mystics cultivated it to focus during prayers. Coffee consumption then spread through the Arabian Peninsula to West Asia. Regionally, Qataris have the most expensive coffee today. In the capital, Doha, cafes charge around $6.79 per cup.

It is noteworthy that in all Muslim cultures, coffee is a traditional symbol of friendship and hospitality, with offering coffee to strangers accompanied by sweet dates being common.

Rest of Asia and Oceania

Vietnam, the second largest coffee exporter in the world, is also a great place to enjoy a good cup of coffee. The average price is around $1.98, with coffee traditionally filtered and served with sweetened condensed milk.

Indonesia is home to the most expensive coffee variety in the world, where beans, first digested by civets, are harvested from their droppings. Nepal is where we find the cheapest coffee in this region of Asia, at $1.49 per cup. Meanwhile, Seoul is the most expensive in the area and the entire world, with a price of $7.80 per cup.

In Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee, the ritual preparation and consumption of coffee is a sacred ceremony. Usually lasting up to three hours, it involves cleaning both the kitchen and the coffee beans and grinding them with an exact ritual. Afterward, coffee is served in three rounds, and drinking it in community is an opportunity for building community and hospitality.

Botswana is the most expensive place in Africa to drink coffee. In the capital city, Gaborone, the average price is $2.49 per cup. Namibia is the cheapest place in Africa to drink coffee, charging an average of $1.89 per cup.
