Discover Charles IV's Prague

A key figure during one of the most glorious periods of the Czech Republic, Charles IV was ahead of his time and left his mark on some of the essential places to visit in Prague today.

To commemorate the 700th anniversary of Charles IV's birth, the Czech capital has created a series of events that will transport visitors back to the Middle Ages. The Royal Route of Prague is a walking tour that starts at Republic Square, next to the Municipal House, and ends at St. Vitus Cathedral, located within the grounds of Prague Castle.

Along the way, visitors can enjoy iconic Prague sites such as Charles Bridge, the Old Town Bridge Tower, and the Powder Tower located on Celetná Street. Additionally, the route showcases Charles University, which originally occupied the Clementinum, where there's a library worth visiting for its artistic merit.

The Old Town Square and its Town Hall, home to the famous astronomical clock, also date back to the era of Charles IV. Moreover, the House of the Stone Bell, where it is said the Emperor was born, is located here.

After completing the route, architecture enthusiasts can visit the National Technical Museum in Prague, which will host the exhibition "The Art of Architecture" from May 12 to January 8, 2017, featuring life-size reproductions of the most important medieval tools, such as the human-powered wooden crane.

Additionally, Prague has prepared a series of special events to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Charles IV, including exhibitions and tours about Charles IV at Prague Castle starting on April 3, as well as medieval-themed festivities that will fill the streets of Prague with activities related to that era from May 14 to 21.

And since gastronomy cannot be overlooked, from May 25 to 29, the tenth edition of the Prague FOOD Festival will take place, featuring a showcase of medieval cuisine reminiscent of Charles IV's time. This festival will be held in the Royal Gardens of Prague Castle and will boast 42 stands offering local and international food, along with wine, beer, and other non-alcoholic beverages. Tickets will be available for purchase starting April 1.
