Europa Park on Fire: Spain in Flames

For the second time in less than five years, Germany's largest theme park, Europa Park, has been engulfed in flames originating from the Spain area. With the arrival of warmer weather, we are starting to face wildfire season, and it is already wreaking havoc across the Northern Hemisphere. This time, however, it appears that the fire started accidentally in a machinery room, and fortunately, there were no injuries, although the park had to evacuate about 25,000 people.

Europa Park, the largest theme park in Germany, is located in the town of Rust, between the cities of Freiburg and Strasbourg, and attracts nearly six million visitors each year who enjoy over a hundred attractions and 13 roller coasters divided into different themed areas. There are a total of 19 areas, of which 16 represent different countries of the European Union; hence the name of the park.

If Europa Park sounds familiar, it's because we also have our own Parque Europa in Torrejón de Ardoz, Spain, featuring different monuments that pay tribute to various countries of the European Union.

The fire broke out in our country, but this time in a figurative sense, as it was in the themed area of Spain where the fire started.

As reported on the park's own website, "On June 19, 2023, a local fire occurred in the attraction Yomi Magical World of Diamonds at Europa Park. The fire was controlled by the fire department. Thanks to the smooth collaboration of various emergency services and park staff, as well as the impeccable behavior of the visitors, a quick and orderly evacuation was possible."

The thematic area of Spain in Europa Park is themed around Andalucía and is characterized by its white facades and Moorish arches. Flamenco, horses, and Andalusian cuisine are present in what many consider the best theme park in Europe. This was the Spanish area until now, as the fire has devastated much of 'our country' in Rust.

Fortunately, there are no personal injuries to report (only a couple of firefighters suffered minor burns), but reconstruction efforts will take a few months before the Spain area can reopen to the public.

Nonetheless, despite the impressive nature of the fire (the column of smoke was visible from several nearby towns), the park has reopened today as usual.

This is not the first time Europa Park has suffered a fire, as in 2018, another fire affected the attraction Pirates of Batavia and caused a massive column of black smoke that could be seen from several kilometers away. At that time, according to the German newspaper Bild, the flames reached heights of 15 meters.
