With stunning natural attractions, one of the main activities that can be enjoyed in Iceland upon the arrival of good weather is trout and salmon fishing. Specifically, the trout fishing season begins in late April or early May and ends in September or October, although in winter, one can always drill a hole in the ice.

The fishing for this fish mainly takes place in the southern part of the country, where there are many rivers and lakes to find Arctic char and common trout, and the fishing conditions are ideal.

As for salmon, the fishing season starts around June 20 and ends in September, when the Atlantic salmon returns to its home river to spawn before making its last descent into saltwater.

For both trout and salmon fishing, a permit is necessary; for trout fishing, this permit can be obtained on the same day. As for the salmon fishing permit, it takes longer to get, so it must be requested in advance.

The National Angling Association is Iceland's National Fishing Association and grants these permits. They also offer special packages for both trout and salmon fishing, ranging from $33 for a full season fishing permit to $250 for a daily package that includes a guide, accommodation, and meals.

One can fly to Iceland with Icelandair, which offers direct connections between major U.S. cities and Reykjavik.
