On the Road to the Most Beautiful Road in Europe

Twists and turns before a parade of mountains reflecting their silhouette in emerald lakes. Dramatic views of the snow-capped peaks that cut across a horizon blanketed in nature. This is the ascent to Grossglockner, the highest peak in Austria. A giant that rises above the Alps at 3,798 meters in height.

Often frequented by vehicles and motorcyclists (and also by brave cyclists), the road that crosses this dazzling alpine landscape is ranked among the most beautiful in the Old Continent. A short journey, but intense in adventure and beauty. Along its 48 kilometers, there are no less than 36 tight curves with a drop of 2,500 meters.

Grossglockner is located in the Hohe Tauern National Park region, the largest and most protected nature reserve in the country, extending into the states of Tyrol and Carinthia. A place to indulge in hiking along wonderful trails or to practice skiing, the star sport of these areas, with 750 kilometers of slopes for all tastes and levels.

Within this postcard-like setting, the road in question connects the town of Zell am See (in the Salzburg region) with Heiligenblut (in Carinthia). Along the way, you'll find a harmonious combination of glaciers, forest-covered slopes, waterfalls, and lakes nestled between green valleys.

Its beauty has not always been enjoyed as it is now. The construction of this alpine road in 1935 opened these areas, previously reserved for expert mountaineers, to the general public. Today, its route harmoniously blends into the landscape, offering a unique mountain experience and ensuring great driving pleasure.

The Grossglockner panoramic road is a toll road, so before starting the journey, you have to pay about 35 euros per car. It's worth it. Because beyond the scenery, the route leads to a collection of viewpoints, cable cars, trails, and mountain huts, all laid out on a map available at the starting point.

The road ascends between towering peaks or winds through valleys, with a new landscape at every kilometer. Suddenly, the view opens up to the Johannisberg mountain, or uncommon alpine animals such as marmots or ibex may appear on the path.

At any point, short strolls can be started or extensive hikes can be initiated. Along the route, you'll also find some museums with exhibitions about the surroundings and a handful of educational trails inviting exploration.

The final destination arrives at the Emperor Franz Joseph viewpoint, over 2,350 meters high, where a terrace offers panoramic views. At its feet lies the Pasterze, the largest glacier in Austria, spanning eight kilometers, which, unfortunately, is shrinking due to climate change.

From this point, you can take a funicular down to the trail leading to the glacier to cap off this wonderful road trip.
