Taking good photographs in winter is not as easy as it seems. The reason lies in the low light that tends to be present in this season. And if we add to that the celebrations in poorly lit interiors or outside in the middle of the night, the situation becomes even more complicated.

Many of the photographs taken during this time end up blurry or with strange colors. However, this doesn't have to happen if you keep a couple of tips in mind. There are several ways to avoid blurry photos. The main one is to use the camera's flash. But there are certain things to consider before doing so. The first is that the range of the flash is limited. Typically, the built-in flashes are only effective at distances of three to four meters. Additionally, the direct light from the flash can make the colors in the photograph appear dull. This can be solved by using an external flash, but they can be expensive.

You can achieve good results indoors using slow flash. This way, the flash light mixes with the ambient light, resulting in less artificial photographs. However, you need to watch the shutter speed to avoid blurred photos or use a tripod and tell the subject to stay still while the image is taken.

You can also adjust the ISO value to avoid blurry photos, as explained in this section in previous months.

On the other hand, to ensure accurate colors, you should adjust the white balance depending on the type of light (fluorescent, sunlight, tungsten, incandescent bulb...). Although ideally, you would use the custom setting by focusing on something white (you can bring a piece of white cardstock for this purpose).
