Interview with Iciar Bollain
Her latest film, Maixabel, won three Goya Awards at the recent ceremony of the Academy of Arts and Cinematographic Sciences of Spain. In late 2022, she received the Woman in Film Award at the 59th Gijón International Film Festival. These are just some of the recognitions that the director and actress, Iciar Bollain, has received in recent months.
Getting to know her traveling side helps us dive deeper into her wonderful films, which have shown us beautiful landscapes, such as those of the Valencian Community in The Wedding of Rosa or those of Bolivia in Even the Rain. This is the traveling life of Iciar Bollain.
- When thinking about her childhood, what are her most memorable vacations?
August months spent in a beach town in Alicante. Pine trees, the beach, and a ton of cousins. We had nothing but punctured floaties from the previous summer and mismatched fins (if you were drowning, some aunt nearby would help you), but it was total freedom; we only went home to eat or have dinner.
- What was the first trip she took without her parents?
With my group of friends from school, traveling through Andalusia, hitchhiking and camping out, without a dime.
- If she didn't live where she does, what city would she like to live in?
In Madrid. It remains my city, where I grew up and where I feel most at home.
- Has she ever taken a trip inspired by a book, movie, or album?
I don't think so. I'm not very nostalgic and I have a bad memory. But I do like to recognize places in books or movies where I've been.
- Favorite mode of transportation?
The train, without a doubt. I think it's a great plan; a few hours ahead with a book, or company, or simply looking at the scenery out the window.
- What is the most bizarre purchase she has made on one of her trips?
In Nepal, clothes that were the most discreet there, I had no idea how to wear them on the way back home...
- What must not be missing from her suitcase?
A book and a notepad. And shoes for walking.
