Every person is unique and different for many reasons; everyone has their own characteristics, emotions, or traditions that make them distinct. However, if there is something fundamental in people's identity, it is their last name. The family name that gets passed down from generation to generation represents the historical roots and legacy of each family.

But sometimes, what seems like a simple word accompanying our name can reveal very special information about our life. The truth is that many people are unaware of the real history of surnames, which were created hundreds of years ago to refer to the occupation of the possessor, their place of residence, or even some traits of the person's personality.

From the moment of their creation until now, they have been passed down from parents to children, and unfortunately, many have no idea why that is their name and what this beautiful tradition is about.

Surnames not only pass from generation to generation; they also transmit across cultures, demonstrating humanity's historical ability to move and intermingle. In Spain, the Arab influence is particularly notable, leaving an indelible mark on our culture, architecture, and gastronomy.

For centuries, the Iberian Peninsula lived under the influence of the Arab population, which left a significant legacy in our country, reflected today in aspects such as surnames, names, buildings, and much more. This historical event dates back thousands of years when Muslims arrived in al-Andalus. At that moment began a continuous conquest of what is now Spain and Portugal.

Muslims controlled the entire country for approximately eight centuries until the Catholic Monarchs regained power, marking the end of the Arab empire in Spain. However, since that time, many customs, traditions, and beliefs of Arabic origin have remained as heritage, including surnames.

The legacy of Arabic names in our country is very evident, especially regarding surnames. In fact, a large part of these characteristic names of Spain and Portugal has a direct origin in the Muslim era, and very few people know it. Generally, these names inherited from previous historical periods refer to the place of origin of the Muslim family.

These Arabic designations usually have the prefix "Al-" or the suffix "-ex". If we stop to think, a large part of the surnames in our country have one of these characteristics or even both. There is also another possibility of Spanish surnames with Arabic origins, those that include the prefix "Ben-". This leads us to think that a significant portion of the Spanish population might have Arab ancestors without knowing it.

What are the Spanish Surnames of Arabic Origin?

Some very common surnames among Spaniards that have Arabic origins and likely indicate direct descent from an Arab include: Abril, Aguilar, Álamo, Albarracín, Alcalá, Alcántara, Almansa, Almeida, Barroso, Benegas, Bono, Buendía, Castillo, Cid, Cordobés, Cortés, Elías, García, Gálvez, Guerra, Herrera, Jaén, Lama, Lucas, Martínez, Méndez, Mendoza, Molina, Morales, Nicolás, Palacios, Pascual, Pérez, Ponce, Salas, Salvador, Torres, Valenciano.

There are many other typical words in our country that have Arabic origins, generally those that start with "Al-", such as albañil, alpargata, alambre, or alarma.

The mixing of cultures always brings benefits to both, adopting each other's traditions to create new ones. However, having a surname of Arabic origin does not necessarily mean one has Arabic ancestry; it is a testament to the rich history of the Iberian Peninsula and the influence of different cultures within it.
