High-Speed Train Routes in Spain

Introduction

With new destinations being added in 2023 to the low-cost high-speed train offerings, such as the Madrid-Ourense connection with Avlo, here are some of the star stops of the Avlo, Ouigo, and iryo trains:

Barcelona (Madrid-Zaragoza-Tarragona-Barcelona Line)

a. With Avlo: Renfe's long-distance high-speed service began operations on June 23, 2021, connecting Madrid with Figueres starting at prices from seven euros. Some trains stop in Guadalajara, Calatayud, Zaragoza, Lleida, Tarragona, Barcelona, and Girona, while others are direct.

b. With Ouigo: since May 2021, the French company has offered tickets to travel from Madrid to Barcelona, with direct trains or with stops in Zaragoza and Tarragona. With prices starting from nine euros, there are 10 daily frequencies between Madrid and Barcelona, connecting both cities in 2 hours and 30 minutes.

c. With iryo: the company formed by partners from the airline Air Nostrum, the infrastructure company Globalvia, and the Italian rail operator Trenitalia began operations in Spain on November 25, 2022, connecting Madrid with Barcelona (and stopping in Zaragoza) with prices starting from 18 euros. Although they do not label their trips as low-cost, they do aim for more competitive prices than those of the AVE.

Valencia (Madrid-Cuenca-Valencia Line)

a. Avlo: Renfe has launched a campaign offering 30,000 seats to travel on AVE and Avlo trains during the Fallas festival. Available for travel between March 9 and March 21, with prices starting from 7 euros per trip.

b. Ouigo: the French high-speed train operator has connected Madrid (Chamartín) with Valencia since October 7, 2022. The journey takes 1 hour and 50 minutes, and tickets start from nine euros. Currently, there are 10 daily frequencies (five outbound and five return) on this route, with 35,630 seats available weekly for their double-decker trains.

c. Iryo: on December 16, 2022, iryo connected Madrid with Valencia and Cuenca.

Seville (Madrid-Córdoba-Sevilla Line)

a. Avlo: although there were rumors that the Madrid-Seville Avlo route would be available in 2022, no concrete date has been set yet.

b. Iryo: the company has announced that it will connect Madrid with Seville, Malaga, and Córdoba in the first quarter of 2023. This will start on March 31. The route to Malaga from Madrid or Córdoba will have up to 10 trains a day in both directions.

c. Ouigo: the operator expects to open the Madrid-Seville and Madrid-Malaga routes by the end of 2023.

Alicante (Madrid-Albacete-Alicante/Murcia Line)

a. Avlo: there is still no date for the connection between Madrid and Alicante with Renfe's low-cost high-speed company.

b. Ouigo: the company has announced it will reach Alicante sometime in 2023, but no specific date has been set yet.

c. Iryo: in June 2023, the connection between Madrid and Alicante will arrive with a stop in Albacete.

Málaga (Madrid-Córdoba-Málaga Line)

a. Avlo: currently, there is no information regarding the Madrid-Málaga connection with Avlo.

b. Iryo: starting March 31, 2023, iryo will begin operating its Frecciarossa trains between Madrid and Málaga with a stop in Córdoba.

c. Ouigo: in the summer of 2022, the company announced it would include Málaga among its 2024 destinations.
