Great stories can come from anywhere. Since Netflix began producing in Spain in 2016, people from all over the world have enjoyed Spanish stories that have traveled around the globe. Recent research conducted by Netflix confirms that exposure to content through the screen leads to greater interest in the heritage and culture portrayed in these stories.

In this way, the talent, landscapes, traditions, and accents of Spain have inspired millions of viewers who have become interested in our country thanks to Netflix productions. In particular, they are more eager to travel and make connections with Spanish culture. For example, they show increased interest in learning Spanish and meeting people from the country. Moreover, according to the study, 81% of viewers of Spanish content who are not familiar with our country are interested in traveling to Spain.

Next, we unveil some of those local places that have crossed the screen in more than 190 countries:

Andalusia

Cádiz, San Fernando, Almería, and Málaga are some of the locations where Season 4 of the iconic The Crown was filmed, in which Queen Elizabeth and her family strive to safeguard the line of succession by finding a suitable wife for Prince Charles, who is still single at 30. This globally successful fiction returned to the region after also filming part of its third season there, including locations like the Sevillian town of San Juan de Aznalfarache or the convent of Santo Domingo in Jerez.

Among other locations, Fair, currently in production, will unveil Andalusian towns such as Zahara de la Sierra (Cádiz) and Minas de Riotinto (Huelva) to viewers. Created by Carlos Montero and Agustín Martínez, this fantastic thriller begins in an unsettling manner: What if two teenage sisters discover that their parents are monsters? A journey of Eva and Sofía in Fair, a town where reality hides a fantastic universe.

This autonomous community has also hosted other international shoots like The Warrior Nun or Connected. Currently, it is also one of the locations where the series Jaguar is being filmed, set in 1960s Spain, a time when hundreds of Nazis sought refuge after World War II; or The Time I Give You, created by Nadia de Santiago, which tells the story of overcoming a breakup.

Aragon

The province of Teruel, rich in moorlands and lagoons, has hosted the filming of The Beast since February, a feature film that tells the story of a family living isolated from the rest of society and whose tranquility is disturbed by the presence of a terrifying creature that will test the bonds that unite them.

Asturias

In 2020, the entertainment service began production of Alma, filmed almost entirely in the Principality of Asturias. The series delves into the story of Alma, who wakes up in a hospital after surviving a bus accident that kills nearly all her companions. Although she remembers nothing of the incident... nor of her past. Her home is filled with memories that are not hers, and both the amnesia and the trauma cause her to experience night terrors and suffer from visions she cannot unravel.

Canary Islands

The landscapes of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera, and La Palma witnessed the adventures and escapades of Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. The Canary Islands provided the backdrop for this fiction filled with kings, elves, humans, and demons. One of the most iconic scenes was filmed on Guayedra beach, which hosted the arrival to the fictitious Gors Velen at sunset.

The island of Lanzarote also serves as the filming location for Welcome to Eden, a series that starts with a genuine question for its protagonists: Are you happy? In response to this question, Zoa and four other young people are invited to the most exclusive party in history on a secret island. But paradise is not really what it seems...

Cantabria

Pedreña, Sopeña, Carmona, and Toñanes are some of the corners of the land that appear in the film Seventeen, a drama that explores the story of Héctor, a 17-year-old boy interned in a juvenile center, who forges an unbreakable bond with a dog as shy and distant as he is. Héctor escapes from the center in search of the animal and embarks on a peculiar journey accompanied by his older brother, his grandmother Cuca, two dogs, a cow, and other animals.

Castile and León

The provinces of Segovia and Ávila were the backdrop for some scenes in the screen adaptation of The Midas Favorites, the series inspired by Jack London's short story The Minions of Midas. In both places, Víctor Genovés, an influential businessman, faces a strange blackmail: if he does not agree to pay a large sum of money, the self-proclaimed Midas Favorites will kill people at random on a specified date and location until they achieve their objective.

Catalonia

The Innocent, the new Netflix series created by Oriol Paulo and starring Mario Casas, has been filmed for eight months in various Catalan locations, including some of the most emblematic horizons of Barcelona. The National Museum of Contemporary Art, the Torre Mapfre, El Prat Airport, and the prison of Figueras are just a few examples.

Terrassa and Barcelona are also some of the settings for the plot of Hache, a series inspired by real events where the protagonist, Helena, a prostitute, starts as a mere pawn in the hands of Malpica, the leader of a criminal gang operating in 1960s Barcelona. Crazy for her, Christmas Days, Magic for Humans, The Practitioner, Xtremo, or Idol (currently in production) are other titles set in various locations across the autonomous community.

Galicia

Ourense, Celanova, Ribadavia, Carballiño, Xinzo de Limia, A Coruña, and Vigo hosted the filming of Netflix's first production developed entirely in Galicia: The Mess You Leave Behind. A thriller that starts with a chilling question for its protagonist, Raquel: "How long will it take you to die?". She is a literature teacher who just accepted a temporary position at her husband's town's school. Her eagerness to teach will collide with students who welcome her with this macabre greeting. Avenida de La Marina and Paseo Marítimo, the As Conchas Reservoir, the Roman Baths of Bande, or the Cañón del Sil area are some of the locations that set the stage for the mysteries of this adaptation of Carlos Montero's novel.

The province of Ourense also hosted part of the filming of the movie Elisa and Marcela, set in Galicia in 1885. In the feature film, Elisa and Marcela meet in the school where they both work. What starts as a close friendship ultimately turns into a romantic relationship that they must keep secret.

Community of Madrid

Money Heist, currently in production of its fifth and final season, has brought to the screen locations such as the Callao square or the Superior Council for Scientific Research. In other fictions, Madrid has also hosted the filming of original productions such as Cable Girls, Elite, The Neighbor, or Who Would You Take to a Deserted Island?

If there is another fiction that exudes Madrid from every angle, it is Valeria, the series about a writer in crisis, both regarding her novels and her husband. Fortunately, her three best friends, Carmen, Lola, and Nerea, support her in her adventures while living their own escapades that take place in corners of the capital ranging from Gran Vía to Malasaña, passing through Chueca or La Latina.

In 2020, Netflix announced the project You Are Not Special, a new comedy series that will be filmed entirely in the Chartered Community of Navarre. Lekunberri, Leitza, and their surroundings are some of the locations where the series' plot will unfold, which tells the life of Amaia. She must leave behind her life in Barcelona and move to her mother's village where nothing ever happens. However, she will soon discover that she may have inherited her grandmother's powers: a woman known to be the only witch to have ever existed in the village.

Basque Country

Currently, the production of Intimacy is taking place in Bilbao, a television drama that begins with the leak to the press of a sexual video of a promising politician, which turns out to be the catalyst for a story about the lives of four women who are forced to tread the thin line between public and private life.
