These are the Safest Cities in the World
While safety may seem subjective, as individuals can feel more or less secure in certain situations depending on personal factors, there are certain data points considered objective indicators that should be evaluated within each city to determine which are the safest destinations in the world.
The Economist Intelligence Unit has recently published the list of the safest cities of 2019, taking into account a good number of factors such as digital security, health security, infrastructure, and personal safety. The top rankings clearly lean toward destinations with high incomes. In fact, six of the 10 safest cities are located in Asia and the Pacific.
For the fifth consecutive year, Tokyo ranks first, with stellar marks in all categories. Singapore and Osaka follow, completing the podium. According to the study conducted, these places are not safer because they are in Asia, but because of the specific urban environments constructed by their residents and officials.
Europe and North America complete the top 10, with Amsterdam (4), while Madrid and Barcelona are ranked at 25 and 26 respectively.
This year's research paid special attention to one particular factor: the cities' ability to recover from shocks, whether man-made or natural disasters. Perhaps that is one reason why Tokyo has led for so many years.
