At the end of last week, one of the most iconic monuments in our country, which attracts about 4.5 million visitors each year, received its construction license. Until now, the construction of the basilica was illegal. After 137 years, the Sagrada Familia has finally obtained the necessary legal permits for construction.

In 1885, three years after the construction of the cathedral began, a permit was requested that was accompanied by plans signed by architect Antoni Gaudí. There was never a response to this request. In 2016, authorities discovered that the Sagrada Familia had never had planning permission.

All of this came to light due to a Twitter post by Janet Sanz, an employee in charge of urban planning for the city. The post explained that the City of Barcelona granted a license of 4.6 million to the committee responsible for the construction. This money will be used to carry out projects that address the impact endured by this iconic monument as it is visited by nearly 5 million people throughout the year.

The Sagrada Familia has agreed not to increase the number of visitors it receives each year and to contribute to the expenses generated by the city of Barcelona.

Now, there is optimistic anticipation that the work that began in 1882 will be completed in 2026, a century after the death of architect Antoni Gaudí. When finished, the basilica will reach a maximum height of 172 meters and will have been completed thanks to a budget of 374 million euros.
