Waypoints is a love letter to the wild Scottish landscape, a true journey of self-discovery along the West Highland Way to reflect on his heritage and what defines him. We took the opportunity of his biography launch to put Sam Heughan through our Travel Passport.

When thinking about your childhood, what are your most memorable vacations?

New York.

What was the first trip you took without your parents?

As a teenager, I backpacked through the Baltic states by train. We explored the cities of Eastern Europe and ended up in St. Petersburg. It was a very different city from Scotland, and we felt like we had traveled back in time.

If you didn't live where you do, which city would you like to live in?

I love New York. The energy, the people, the architecture. I believe that someday I will live there. There is so much to explore. My favorite activity is to take a ferry across the Hudson and visit Brooklyn, where you get a very different view of the city.

What destination would you like to visit if you had the time and/or the money?

Antarctica. I would love to visit and reach the South Pole. Due to climate change, we are losing the ice, and I don't think it will exist in the same way for much longer.

What's your favorite spot on the planet?

I'm obsessed with the South Bank in London. Walking along the Thames to the market for food and drinks. Along the way, you can see St. Paul's Cathedral, the Tate Modern, multiple bridges, including Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. So much history!

Have you taken any trips inspired by a book, movie, or album?

I would love to see Everest. I've watched all the documentaries about it, and I'm intrigued by the story of George Mallory and his attempt to reach it in the 1920s.

Favorite mode of transportation?

By ferry. There are many in Scotland to get to the islands. It's the best way to see the coast and the wildlife. I love standing on the deck the whole trip.

What is the most outrageous purchase you've made on one of your trips?

I just bought a complete handmade coffee set in Portugal. I love ceramics and collect coffee mugs from the places I travel to.

What can't you miss in your suitcase?

A bit of Sassenach whisky. I enjoy the local delicacies from where I travel, but you always need a good whisky at night.
