These Are the Most (and Least) Safe Countries in the World in 2020

Once again, the Global Peace Index has published its ranking of the safest countries in the world. This report is published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, which describes itself as "independent, non-partisan, and non-profit," aiming to focus the world towards peace.

The report lists a total of 163 countries and considers 23 indicators to determine how peaceful or dangerous a country is.

Some of the indicators include: international conflicts, social safety, militarization, the number of violent internal conflicts, the level of political instability, and even the number of homicides in the country.

Through these factors and others, they compile their list every year. In this year's ranking, Spain holds the 38th position out of the 163 represented, with Iceland taking the first place, New Zealand in second, and surprisingly, our neighbor Portugal in third.

Nevertheless, the most notable countries in this ranking are the Nordic countries of Europe such as Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, and Finland, all of which rank among the 25 safest in the world. It is also noteworthy that Europe has the most presence in these top 25 positions on the list, closely followed by Asia.
