The Oldest Village in Asturias: When Nature Stops Time

Nestled among the mountains of Proaza, there is a village of 40 inhabitants that has preserved its medieval identity for centuries. This small municipality is an example of how rural settlements have maintained their original structure without losing their historical essence. The origins of Banduxu date back to the Middle Ages, around the 9th and 10th centuries. During that time, the area had great political importance due to the consolidation of the Kingdom of Asturias, and small settlements were established in the mountainous regions. Banduxu was one of the most powerful.

This village, situated at about 700 meters above sea level, is surrounded by mountains that have formed a natural wall of protection and isolation for centuries, which has allowed its architecture and structure to remain practically intact.

In fact, the road that connects Banduxu with the rest of Proaza did not arrive until 1980, which largely prevented the urban development and modernization that also affected other villages in the region during that time.

The core of the village follows the medieval layout and is organized around its most prominent building: the Torre de Tuñón, a defensive fortress dating back to the 14th century, which features characteristics of military architecture from that era.

Also notable is the Church of Santa María, a small Romanesque temple from the 10th century that was reconstructed in the 16th century and has been part of the religious life of the village's inhabitants for centuries.

In addition to these monuments, Banduxu is filled with traditional houses with wooden balconies that open to the outside, a feature of Asturian rural architecture. These houses follow the traditional pattern, and many of them have been renovated for preservation.

One of the most interesting aspects of Banduxu is the presence of several hórreos from the 16th century, a traditional Asturian structure used for storing grain and other food, representing popular architecture. These structures, elevated on pillars to protect the contents from moisture and rodents, are also a cultural symbol, as they have played a fundamental role in the life of the village.

Another aspect that makes Banduxu a unique destination is its natural environment. Located within the Ubiñas-La Mesa Natural Park, the area is filled with trails and paths. The trail connecting Banduxu with the nearby town of Proaza is one of the most popular, as it offers spectacular views of the Trubia valley. Additionally, it is just 3 kilometers from the Senda del Oso, one of the most popular eco-routes in Spain.
