Tenerife Recovers Its Luxury Icon with the Reopening of the Mencey Hotel

After the Civil War, the Canary Islands began to become an open secret for those who could afford a vacation away from home. The first tourists arriving on the island had no money issues, but they struggled to find elegant accommodations. In 1945, this demand was met with the start of construction of the Mencey (the name given to the monarch or king of the Guanches of Tenerife), a luxury accommodation that has been serving this tourist segment for nearly 60 years.

On November 11, after 20 months of construction and a total investment of nearly 43 million euros, the hotel is once again welcoming guests and repositioning itself in the luxury segment. The new Mencey belongs to the high-end brand The Grand Collection by Iberostar. The renovation aims to blend innovation with tradition, maintaining the five-star service and the historical spirit and essence of a property that has been a gathering point and a social life dynamo in the city.

With the renovations, common spaces have been updated, such as the lounges next to the reception, with their grand hotel atmosphere, and the tropical gardens surrounded by Canarian colonial-style balconies.
