The First Mummy Museum in Spain

The Mummy Museum of Quinto, the first of its kind in Spain, has become a must-visit when traveling through this town in Zaragoza. This museum houses a total of 15 mummies from the 18th and 19th centuries, exhumed from the old church of the Assumption in the locality, now known as El Piquete, during restoration work on the temple. While it is true that it is not the only mummy museum in Spain, it is the only one where the mummies are exhibited at the site where they were buried and later exhumed.

These mummies were discovered in 2011 during a series of archaeological excavations and belong to adult men and women as well as young boys and girls. Their mummification and preservation were made possible due to the special conditions of humidity and temperature present in this old church, not by artificial means, as not all bodies buried in this church were found mummified.

In addition to the 15 mummies, this museum exhibits other objects found in the graves, such as polychrome coffins, rosaries, bracelets, buttons, needles, crucifixes, papal bulls, coins..., as well as ceramic remnants from before and after the construction of the building.

As for the building that houses the Mummy Museum of Quinto, it is the former church of the Assumption, known as "El Piquete," which has now been converted into a museum and cultural space. Deconsecrated after the Civil War, when it served as a lookout point, defense, refuge for civilians, and a combat area, it has had various uses over the years, although it was primarily used as a grain storage facility. However, its origin in the 15th century by the architect of Pope Luna, Master Mahom Ramí, led to its designation as a historical artistic monument in the 1980s and initiated restoration efforts.

The Mummy Museum of Quinto is open only on weekends from Friday to Sunday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. As for the price, general admission costs €7, which includes a guided tour of both the exhibition and the old church of the Assumption.
