The Lowline, the new green project in New York
In the Lower East Side of New York, in an old streetcar station, it is expected that in 2021 the The Lowline will open, the world's first underground park that the city government has just approved.
Currently, as a precursor, The Lowline Lab is a laboratory that can be visited until March 2017 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, where techniques are being tested that will be implemented to create the future underground park through a series of controlled experiments in an environment that mimics the location where The Lowline park will be situated.
The park will be located in an old streetcar station that operated from 1908 until 1948 when it was abandoned after the subway opened. Now, James Ramsey of Raad Studio has designed this underground park where plants and trees will be able to photosynthesize and grow through a new technology based on "remote skylights" that will capture and reflect sunlight from the outside.
On another note, The Lowline will maintain the original structure of the streetcar station as well as other elements of the construction such as cobblestones, streetcar tracks, and vaulted ceilings.
