Unlike the elevators found in most buildings, this one has no limit for four people, nor for five. Not even for 100. This is the new elevator at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai, the financial capital of India.

It was inaugurated by the Finnish company KONE in 2022 and has since held the record for the world's largest elevator, measuring 25.78 square meters and capable of accommodating up to 200 people. Weighing 16 tons, this engineering marvel can transport dozens of people across the five floors of the Jio World Convention Center.

The ceiling of the elevator showcases the luxurious design of Jio World, inspired by a lotus flower: eight golden petals, with lights that fill the space with color, making it even more impressive. On the sides, mirrors with filigree enhance the elevator's aesthetics without distracting from the main attraction: a panoramic glass wall that replaces the back wall, offering stunning views of the imposing buildings in the business district.

As one of KONE's most ambitious engineering projects, the elevator features a system of 18 pulleys and 9 ropes that allow passengers to be transported along with the entire weight of the elevator across the five floors of the building.

It has a single centrally opening door with four panels that leads into the space. Over the two years of its operation, it has become a leading tourist attraction and a draw for various personalities from all over the world.

India Does It Again

In just over twenty years, India has transitioned from an exotic and esoteric country to a full-fledged global powerhouse. This transformation has been significantly driven by its rapid industrial growth, which currently employs over 100 million people.

Beyond being a unique tourist destination, India has become a desirable place for entrepreneurs and investment funds from around the globe, who see in this booming economy an opportunity for the future.

This Finnish company is one of the strongest in the world in the manufacturing of elevators and escalators. Operating globally, it has over a century of history, having expanded to more than 60 countries. They have taken part in other major projects, like the mobility systems at Beijing International Airport and Madison Square Garden in New York.

This elevator has been their most ambitious project to date, and the company has admitted to needing months of planning, innovation, and collaboration to bring it to fruition. The result is undoubtedly a mix of engineering, art, and architecture.
