The Villages with the Longest Names in Spain

According to the National Statistics Institute, there are 8,131 municipalities in Spain, but it is difficult (not to say impossible) to provide an exact number of villages scattered throughout the geography. The reason? The number often varies due to different factors, such as the creation of new municipalities or the merging of existing ones, among others. Nevertheless, from Revista VIAJAR we bring you the villages with the longest names in Spain. Yes, villages that, when pronouncing them, can take quite a while, and it takes at least some strength halfway through the name.

Gargantilla del Lozoya and Pinilla de Buitrago (Madrid)

We start this unique journey in the capital, in a village of the Sierra de Madrid that has the particular honor of having the longest name in Spain: Gargantilla del Lozoya y Pinilla de Buitrago, which has 44 characters (including spaces between words, in case someone decides to count them).

Gargantilla del Lozoya y Pinilla de Buitrago, located less than an hour from the capital, is mainly distinguished by three things as proclaimed on the municipality's website: its landscapes, its history and culture, and its gastronomy and hospitality. A place worth visiting and one that you will surely shorten the name for.

Villarcayo de Merindad de Castilla la Vieja (Burgos)

Now we travel to Burgos to discover Villarcayo de Merindad de Castilla la Vieja. This municipality in the north of the province is currently made up of more than 30 population centers filled with history and art and surrounded by the harmonious landscape that characterizes this beautiful region.

Both the town of Villarcayo and the entire municipality offer very attractive conditions for tourism. They boast numerous natural, cultural, and artistic resources, an excellent gastronomic offering, vibrant and intense cultural activity, extensive sports and leisure possibilities, and their emblematic green space of El Soto. And take note because it is the second municipality in Spain with the longest name, with 43 characters.

Colinas del Campo de Martín Moro Toledano (León)

For a long time, the residents of the León village of Colinas del Campo de Martín Moro Toledano have boasted of being the village with the longest name in Spain, but the truth is that it ranks third behind the aforementioned ones, with 41 characters.

Colinas del Campo de Martín Moro Toledano, located in the parish of the municipality of Igüeña, in the El Bierzo region, stands out for having countless hiking trails to ascend Pico Catoute, one of the most prominent peaks of the León western mountains.

Cruïlles Monells i Sant Sadurní de l'Heura (Girona)

From León we move to Girona to discover Cruïlles Monells i Sant Sadurní de l'Heura, a municipality with an unpronounceable name for those who do not master Catalan.

Located in the Baix Empordà region, it was formed in 1974 with the union of the municipalities of Cruïlles, Monells, and Sant Sadurní. Among its places of interest, we can find several churches (San Sadurní, San Juan de Salelles, or the Romanesque church dating from the 11th century, Santa Eulalia de Cruïlles), the walls and the keep tower in Cruïlles, or the spectacular Arch Street in Monells, under curious vaults.

Vandellòs i l'Hospitalet de l'Infant (Tarragona)

Lastly, we remain in Catalonia, but move to Tarragona to encounter Vandellòs i l'Hospitalet de l'Infant. Located in the Baix Camp region, it comprises the population centers of Vandellós, Hospitalet del Infante, Masriudoms, Masboquera, and l'Almadrava.

Currently, as a result of tourism and the construction and operation of the nuclear power plant located within the municipality of Vandellós, this municipality is simply known by that name. Much more practical, but lacking the pomp of the original name that makes it one of the villages with the longest names in all of Spain.
