They are going to build the Titanic again: this is how the ship will return to the seas
The Titanic is one of those ships that always comes to mind when evoking sea voyages where luxury and opulence stand out above all else. And now, more than a century after its sinking, an Australian billionaire plans to build a replica and return it to the seas. This new ship will have all the necessary safety features to prevent the tragedy from happening again.
Over a decade ago, Clive Palmer, an Australian mogul and politician, decided that a century after the Titanic sank, it was time to create Titanic II, a replica of the legendary ocean liner. The plans were interrupted and the project was set aside until late 2018. During those years, Palmer focused on building a political career, and when he was ready to pursue his dream again, COVID hit.
With ports closed, many cruises in quarantine, and the chaos the pandemic brought to our lives, Palmer saw his project in jeopardy once more... until now. Several years have passed, and things have come back into focus. It seems that Titanic II is closer than ever to becoming a reality.
Why build a new Titanic?
The current offering of cruises is vast, but Palmer believes that his Titanic II could generate significant interest among travelers; in fact, he held a press conference at the Sydney Opera House to relaunch the project.
What characterizes this millionaire is his perseverance in bringing the Titanic back to sailing. For this, his company Blue Star Line continues to work on constructing a new 'unsinkable.' The figures are just as staggering as those of the original ocean liner: the ship will be 269 meters long and 32.2 meters wide. The capacity will be for 2,345 passengers spread across nine decks with 835 cabins, and nearly half of them will be reserved for first-class passengers.
In the relaunch, Blue Star's team distributed a video showcasing the design of the ship and what each room will look like; additionally, to make it more authentic, various actors have been hired to don period costumes.
The new Titanic
A lot has changed, and society has evolved since the Titanic tragedy, but that does not diminish our fascination with this vessel in which more than a thousand people lost their lives. The various museums dedicated to this ship around the world serve as proof.
Returning to Titanic II, it's interesting to note that, as reported in the relaunch, passengers will be encouraged to dress in the clothing used in the early 20th century. It is also fascinating to discover that they will attempt to faithfully reproduce the Titanic, and third-class passengers will enjoy stews and mashed potatoes at long tables in a communal dining area. However, other meal options will be available for those who prefer a less authentic experience.
Currently, Blue Star Line is seeking bids to find a shipbuilder to begin work in the first quarter of 2025. It seems Palmer prefers that the construction of Titanic II takes place in Europe, as he believes that Chinese standards do not meet his dreams. These statements were not particularly 'friendly,' considering that with the construction of this ship, the mogul aims to achieve world peace, as he expressed in the press conference: "Titanic II can provide peace. It can be a ship of peace among all countries in the world. Millions of people have dreamed of sailing on it, seeing it in port, and experiencing its unique majesty. The Titanic will be the ship where those dreams come true."
