Toyokoro: The Beach Where Snow, Sand, and Sea Meet
Hokkaido Island in Japan is one of the few places in the world where the phenomenon of jewel ice occurs, a natural spectacle that transforms ice into suggestive frozen blocks scattered like jewels on the sand. The show culminates in an evocative image of Toyokoro, where snow, sand, and sea converge in a visual symphony that leaves travelers speechless.
We move to Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's main islands, known for its volcanoes, natural hot springs, and ski areas; however, it also features a beach that has become an unprecedented tourist attraction: Otsu.
This beach, also known as Toyokoro Ice Beach, is located in the eponymous city, southeast of Hokkaido, and until a few years ago, it was a quiet area away from travelers and the curious.
Since social media has brought various natural phenomena closer to us, Toyokoro Ice Beach has gained significant popularity, and currently, photographers and explorers flock to capture the best photographs of this spectacular natural phenomenon.
What is the 'Jewel Ice' Phenomenon?
The 'Jewel Ice' phenomenon arises from the combination of the Tokachi River water, temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius, and varying ocean tides. When these elements come together, usually during the months of January and February, this singular formation occurs.
Its creation is due to the freezing of the Tokachi River waters, which turn into imposing blocks of ice as temperatures drop. These frozen chunks break apart and are carried into the ocean on a journey where they get polished until they finally reach the shore and melt away.
The transparency of the pieces creates the jewel effect, which, combined with the light of dawn or dusk, is even more spectacular.
How is Toyokoro's Jewel Ice Produced?
To achieve this phenomenon, the freezing process must be very slow. Normally, when water freezes, it does so quickly, which causes bubbles to form inside. To create these polished and uniform blocks, time and a 'natural polishing' process are needed to allow impurities and air to rise to the surface.
The fine strip of sand that lies between the snow and the sea has a unique majesty and adds even more beauty to these jewel ice pieces. A unique spectacle that results in breathtaking beauty. However, if traveling to Japan is not feasible, we can always rely on social media to view this particular natural phenomenon.
