Three castles for sale in Spain: some for as little as 45,000 euros
Who hasn't dreamed of living in a castle? Whether to feel like a king or queen, or to indulge in the luxury of living in a mansion with history. This dream can come true. In Spain, there are castles for sale (some in better condition than others), and they appear on real estate websites as if they were ordinary apartments. Living a Disney fantasy or a Game of Thrones experience is just a click away (and a minimum of 45,000 euros).
Castillo de Castilnovo
About 45 minutes by car from Segovia, and just an hour from Madrid, is this castle that costs 15,000,000 euros. Historians disagree on whether it was built in the 7th or 10th century, and rumors have it that this castle, which belonged to the Catholic Monarchs, was the residence of Juana la Loca after her husband's death.
The five-story castle features terraces, 22 en-suite bedrooms, and private bathrooms with saunas, and it is available for events while waiting for a new owner. The fortress is popular for wedding celebrations; for example, Lucía Pombo, the sister of influencer María Pombo, got married there in 2022.
Castillo de la Raya
This medieval castle from the 12th century is located on the border between Soria and Zaragoza, specifically in a village of 190 inhabitants called Monteagudo de las Vicarías. The listing for the castle specifies that there are no bathrooms. How can it be that a castle has no bathrooms? The answer lies in the state of the fortress: it is in ruins, and for this reason, it only costs 45,000 euros.
Monteagudo de las Vicarías lacks the resources to repair the castle, so it was decided to put it up for sale in the hope that a buyer would invest in its restoration, even if it is simply to build a residence of over 1,300 m², which is the size of the castle's grounds.
Castillo de Espeluy
It is possible to live in a fortress from Al-Andalus (or one that was built during the Caliphate). The castle of Espeluy is in the province of Jaén, and although it was once a Muslim fortification, when Fernando III reclaimed it in the 13th century, it came under the jurisdiction of the Crown. In 1321, the new Christian castle was constructed, and its last renovations date from the 19th century. The castle costs one and a half million euros and includes seven bathrooms, seven bedrooms, and even a house for the castle's caretaker.
Celebrating weddings and events in castles, or even staying in hotels located in these fortresses is an unforgettable experience, but calling a building where kings ruled during the Middle Ages, or where historic battles took place, a "home" is a different matter altogether. Which one would you choose?
