Hidden Cameras in Your Airbnb: The Trick to Detect Them
Many of us go on vacation (whether in apartments or hotels) and trust that we are safe. However, in recent years, there have been reports of hidden cameras in accommodations provided by Airbnb. Although the regulations prohibit the use of cameras inside the apartment, we will show you a way to detect hidden cameras that can be used in any type of room.
What Does the Regulation Say?
Until a few months ago, Airbnb allowed the use of cameras in common areas of the apartment, provided they were visible and guests were informed of the situation through the listing. Under no circumstances were recording devices allowed in bathrooms or bedrooms, as this would invade the guest's privacy.
In March of this year, the company announced that it would completely ban the use of cameras in apartments listed on the website, except for recordings made outside of the accommodations. This new regulation, which went into effect in April, allows the use of cameras in "common areas such as lobbies, hallways, and restaurants," as stated in Airbnb's announcement.
Listings on the website must inform about the presence of cameras outside, and they also must disclose their location. The new regulations specify that, even though devices are not located inside the apartment, "they will not be permitted in certain outdoor areas where there is a greater expectation of privacy, such as a enclosed outdoor shower or sauna."
To further protect the privacy of guests, cameras are not allowed to capture high sound levels to prevent conversations that may occur near the camera from being recorded.
Spy Cameras
The new Airbnb regulations protect guests from being spied on by cameras that are in plain sight, but one of the problems users of this apartment rental service have encountered is recordings made through hidden cameras.
These cameras can be hidden in all sorts of objects such as outlets, alarm clocks, or keys. The issue with these cameras is that they can be found in objects where you would never think there is a recording lens. These devices can be purchased on Amazon, and usually do not exceed $50.
How to Detect Hidden Cameras?
The camera lens reflects light, so one way to find hidden cameras in your hotel or Airbnb room is by using your mobile phone flashlight. If you sweep the light and find a small bluish reflection, you have found a camera. It is important to check small everyday objects: cameras are often where you least expect them.
Apartments that violate the regulations or use hidden cameras can be penalized, and their service may be removed from the Airbnb website.
